So long, Michael Young! You will be missed... or WILL you?

1971.  The year of my birth.  That GLORIOUS year. Little 6lb 8.5oz Timm was brought into the world. April 7 to be exact.  One year and 8 days later, April 15, 1972, the Rangers played their first game EVER, losing to the Angels, 1-0.  And folks, that's as good as it gets.  Some 37 years later (how is it that I'm only 28 still) the Rangers are still embarrassing themselves, the fans, and MLB.

I know, you're going to throw 1996, 1998, and 1999 in my face.  Yep those were pretty good years, but who remembers them?  So they don't count for today's discussion.  Another good day (so we thought) was Dec 11, 2000. Ahhhh yes, the signing of Alex Rodriguez.  Who knew then what a fiasco that was.  But let's go back to July 19 of that same year, when the Rangers acquired Michael Young from Toronto for Esteban Loiza.  We weren't really promised anything at the time, but who knew then that Michael Young would be the face of the franchise 8 years later. Especially when Mr. Rodriguez was earning more than the US Government at the time. So long, Alex.  And now, so it appears, we will be saying, "so long, Michael".

Five years ago, Young happily switched positions to make room for Alfonso Soriano after Rodriguez was sent packing. It was in the best interest of the TEAM. Now lets fast forward to 2009.  Young is being forced... ahem... asked, to move again, this time to 3rd base to make room for PROSPECT Elvis Andrus.  That itself isn't as much a problem as the way it was handled by our John Hart wannabe GM Jon Daniels.

Young revealed over the weekend that that during a breakfast with JD a few weeks ago, he was given an ultimatum to move to 3rd.  That breakfast then apparently turned in to the food fight scene from Animal House.

Dear Jon Daniels-  Can you tell me a situation in which issuing an ultimatum to your highest paid and possibly most talented player can turn out to be a good thing?

Dear Michael Young- Can you tell me a situation in which you, as a $16,000,000 per year player who has the utmost respect in the community and on the team, stands your ground and immediately demands a trade and it turns out well?

Both are wrong here, but the majority of my blame goes to John Hart, oops, I mean Jon Daniels ( I always do that) for putting Young in that situation to begin with.

The Rangers like Andrus, especially since he was a piece of the deal that sent Teixeira to the Braves, and for obvious reasons REALLY want him to work out. The Rangers also say that Young needs to be a team player or leave Arlington.

As the recognized team leader, Young should realize that the team needs help from young players and Andrus could actually be a good fit if given a chance.  The Rangers are betting on Young sticking it out at 3rd and having a lasting influence on Andrus in the clubhouse and at the plate.

I for one hope Young moves on, and the Rangers are able to actually get something for him. No, I'm not going to say the P word, because we know those "P"'s rarely come to Arlington, and when they do, it never works out well... (see Chan Ho Park and Kevin Millwood)

Young is 32 and not getting any younger. And seriously? $16,000,000? Has he EVER been worth that? Much less, WILL he be worth that at 34? 36? He is already showing signs of diminishing skills. Maybe it's time to cut ties and see what we can get in exchange.

So here's to YOU, Michael Young and Jon Daniels!  Way to expose the Rangers for the classless and bass-akwards organization that you truly are.  And on a side note, JD, how much worse will YOU screw things up before Mr Hicks replaces you with a monkey?  Hopefully that monkey will be in place by April of 2010.
