The future of movie rentals...

First was the invention of the VCR and the videocassette (sorry, BETA, you won't be discussed here). That made the movie rental industry possible. SEVERAL years later, we're all beaten down with the trip to the movie store to wander the aisles endlessly looking for that elusive movie that we don't even know the name of. Heck, we don't even know what the VHS sleeve looks like. Then we have to wait in line to check out while being tempted by candy, soft drinks, and popcorn that NONE of us even need. I hate impulse buying. And I won't even get into... can I even type the words... late fees. YUK!

Then, many years even after that, came mail order movie rental.  Netflix started it and Blockbuster soon followed after losing about 3/4 of it's 92% market share. How great is mail order? You can set up your queue from any computer or web-enabled cell phone, read reviews, and search a massive movie database all online.  Ah yes, the epitome of convenience and laziness.

Then we went one step further.  Movies streaming right to your home entertainment system!
Netflix set the standard by offering streaming movies directly into your homes, thus doing away with any and all waste of paper or dvd materials during production. But the homeowner was required to pay an upfront fee for equipment and software to make that happen.  Now even that has become passe, with Netflix offering that software built in to certain LG HDTV's.  This my friends, is the future.

LG Electronics and Netflix have announced the first broadband-enabled HDTVs with Netflix streaming software embedded directly in the TV, requiring no external device. LG's new LCD and plasma "Broadband HDTVs" will display the library of movies & TV episodes that Netflix members can watch instantly directly on the TV with Ethernet connectivity.

The new broadband HDTVs will be available for sale this spring. LG will demonstrate the HDTVs this week at the 2009 CES show in Las Vegas. In addition to the HDTVs, LG Electronics announced plans to release five new models of Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems that can stream movies & TV episodes from Netflix.

How convenient...
